Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter Weather

Written by CopperPoint Insurance Companies | Jan 7, 2026 4:56:07 PM

Winter brings more than chilly temperatures. Snow, ice, and reduced visibility can create hazardous driving conditions and increase the risk of accidents. Preparing your vehicle ahead of time and adjusting your driving habits are key steps in staying safe on winter roadways. The CopperPoint Loss Control team shares six practical tips to help you get your vehicle winter-ready and navigate challenging conditions with confidence.

Inspect Your Tires

Ensure your tires have sufficient tread depth and proper inflation. Well-maintained tires improve traction on snow- and ice-covered roads and help reduce the risk of slipping or skidding.

Check Your Battery

Cold temperatures can significantly reduce battery performance. If your battery is older, have it tested and replace it if it is nearing the end of its lifespan to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

Top Off Fluids

Check that coolant (antifreeze) and windshield washer fluid levels are full. Use a winter-grade washer fluid that won’t freeze and a winter-grade engine oil if recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

Inspect Wipers and Lights

Replace worn or streaking wiper blades and confirm that all headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly and free of snow or ice.

Keep the Gas Tank Full

Winter weather can lead to delays, detours, or road closures. Keeping your gas tank at least half full helps ensure you can reach your destination or stay warm if travel is unexpectedly interrupted.

Essentials to Carry in the Car

It’s a good practice to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle during winter months. Recommended items include an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, basic tools, sand or kitty litter for traction, blankets, gloves, boots, warm clothing, food, and water.
