Auto Incident

What to do if you have been involved in an auto incident

Policyholders should err on the side of reporting any instance in which they believe they might later be accused of causing injury or damage to another party.

  • Do not admit fault
  • Confirm no one is seriously injured or in danger
  • Call 911 if appropriate
  • If the damage is minor, move vehicles out of traffic to a safe place
  • Shift into park, turn off your vehicle, and turn on the hazard lights
  • Use cones, warning triangles, or flares for added safety, if you have them
  • Take photos of everything, including:
    » License plates
    » Vehicle impact areas
    » VINs
    » Scene surrounding the accident
    » Insurance cards
  • Report the accident to your insurance company
  • Exchange contact information with the other drive any witnesses
